Pool House

The next West Coast Modern home is ready for its new custodian.

The Pool House was designed and built by the prolific Lauder Bros Builders Inc., reputed in their ability to be in sync with the architects. The Lauder Bros were the master builders on projects with Dan White, Barry Downs, Fred Hollingsworth, and Arthur Erickson. Personal homes of Vancouver luminaries like Jim Pattison, Peter brown, Sam Belzberg bore the Lauder stamp.

The Pool House is one of the last remaining examples of the mid-century moderns that the Lauders designed and built themselves. It’s reminiscent of the Eichler homes in California, which launched a movement of modern open-plan design throughout the West Coast.

Nestled among the forest of upper Dundarave, with a private, expansive view of the Burrard Inlet, it’s as if a slice of Palm Springs is hidden in the city.

Experience an important piece of Vancouver’s architectural history.

“Master Builders.”
– Western Living, 1986

“There are hundreds of individuals and firms calling themselves contractors, but only a handful of master builders and fewer than a dozen in Vancouver, among them Mal Lauder. The 63-year-old Lauder, tall, long-haired and as healthy looking as a forest ranger, is the unquestioned leader, often having four or five projects on the go, all of them valued from $200,000 to several million dollars. He doesn’t build, he orchestrates.”

Lauder Bros Builders Inc.
Three Generations of Master Builders

Eric and Mal Lauder, founders of the building company, were born in West Vancouver in the 1920s. The two were posted in Ontario and Yukon, respectively, during the war. In 1948, the post-war housing boom was on, and the brothers returned to Vancouver to build homes, many of which were post & beam and designed by the Lauder brothers themselves.

As the company grew in its reputation, their clients included Vancouver’s most prestigious architects. Among them were Dan White, Barry Downs, Fred Hollingsworth, and Arthur Erickson. The company continues to operate to this day, now led by the grandson. An entire archive is stored in the West Vancouver Museum, accessible by the public.
