Pool House
Presenting the Pool House.
Tucked into the forest above Dundarave, this 1950s mid-century modern remains remarkably intact—a cedar-lined retreat where California cool meets the quiet of the Pacific Northwest. Elevated above village life, yet hidden among trees, it offers rare privacy and framed ocean views. At its heart, a forest-fringed pool evokes a rare stillness—where modernism and nature meet in balance.
Safeguarded over time, it now stands ready to welcome its next custodian.

“There are hundreds of individuals and firms calling themselves contractors, but only a handful of master builders and fewer than a dozen in Vancouver, among them Mal Lauder.
The 63-year-old Lauder, tall, long-haired and as healthy looking as a forest ranger, is the unquestioned leader, often having four or five projects on the go, all of them valued from $200,000 to several million dollars. He doesn’t build, he orchestrates.”

Three Generations of Master Builders
Eric and Mal Lauder, founders of the building company, were born in West Vancouver in the 1920s. The two were posted in Ontario and Yukon, respectively, during the war. In 1948, the post-war housing boom was on, and the brothers returned to Vancouver to build homes, many of which were post & beam and designed by the Lauder brothers themselves.
As the company grew in its reputation, their clients included Vancouver’s most prestigious architects. Among them were Dan White, Barry Downs, Fred Hollingsworth, and Arthur Erickson. The company continues to operate to this day, now led by the grandson. An entire archive is stored in the West Vancouver Museum, accessible by the public.
