Introduction

West Coast Modern presents the Ron Thom Case Study House. A disappearing template for modern design, this architectural gem draws inspiration from such iconic homes as the Stahl House in Los Angeles (Pierre Koenig,1959). This Vancouver version was built shortly after, following the same principles of mid-century modern design: flat roof, clerestory windows, deep eaves, big windows & exposed post-and-beam structure; This renovated 5BD, 7BA estate feature 1-level living w/open spaces that fall into West Vancouver's natural landscape of forest outlooks, mountain & panoramic views. Here's your chance to own one of Ron Thom's remaining works. Like Arthur Erickson, Ron is also one of our grandfathers of West Coast Modernism.

“In 1959 the Stahl House by Pierre Koenig (Case Study House 22) was built. Shortly after Ron Thom designed a Vancouver version based on the same principles.”

Ron Thom, Architect

Ron Thom was born in Penticton in 1923 and studied painting after serving in the RCAF during World War II. He graduated from Vancouver School of Art (now known as Emily Carr University of Art and Design) in 1947. He did not have formal architectural training, but went on to become a registered architect and was eventually made partner before opening his own firm.

Thom was interested in architecture as a complete work of art, from the first inspiration to the execution of the smallest details. Many of his designs were celebrated and high-profile, such as Massey College, Trent University, and the Shaw Festival Theatre. He was made an Officer of the Order of Canada in 1980 for his contributions to architecture and design. His passing in 1986 leaves us with a lasting legacy.
